“I made To Pimp A Butterfly for you” raps Kendrick Lamar on the opening track ‘Untitled 01’. Instead we are given instrumental performances with a chaotic live-in-the-moment sound, therefore giving us a raw but enjoyable experience and an honest insight into his creative process.
Tracks are affected by structural imperfections such as abrupt endings or sharp and messy transitions, removing the ‘safety net’ of flashy production and precise editing other artists use beneath their music. The 35-minute album features Kendrick and collaborating musicians creating mind-bending fusions of jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop.

Untitled unmastered consists of 8 raw and unfinished tracks (each dated and untitled), lost in the creative process of and even revisited after the release of TPAB but instead of being a loose collection of odds and ends, this project proves to hold more unrefined insight Kendrick would like to get off his chest before moving on to another album.Īlthough this series of ‘extras’ isn’t produced or mixed to perfection, it’s assembled to create a solid project that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and definitely worth sharing. ‘TPAB’explores a variety of perspectives on the depression associated with systematically oppressed minorities and the release of untitled unmastered aims to be an unfiltered extension into these same ideas.

Compton rapper, Kendrick Lamar, has been a predominant figure at the fore front of the hip-hop and rap culture movement ever since the release of his 2011 debut studio album Section 80, an album that introduced Kendrick as a promising story-teller with a lot of to say for his generation.
